Well, not all at the same time, necessarily, but these are the topics I’ve been reading about this week. Here are my recommendations for excellent recent online pieces:

Richard N. Landers’ “NSF Report Flawed; Americans Do Not Believe Astrology is Scientific” offers a thoughtful and reasonable critique of the recent astrology poll and highlights how vital it is to consider language assumptions in the framing of questions.

Over at Rewriting the Rules, Meg Barker’s “57 genders (and none for me)? Reflections on the new facebook gender categories” engages in a nuanced explanation and analysis of the complexities of gender labeling, something I’m currently working to understand more fully.

Brian D. Earp’s “Female genital mutilation (FGM) and male circumcision: time to confront the double standard” at Practical Ethics is a highly detailed look at the various types and consequences of female and male “circumcision” practiced across diverse cultures and an evidence-based response to various pro and con arguments often put forward in this area. It’s important and unsettling information that you should have.
